Hockey Day is coming to Bemidji; 13th annual event set for winter 2019

Bemidji HS nordic ski: Jacks compete at Deer River

The Bemidji High Nordic ski teams were the biggest benefiters of the weekend blizzard, finding ski trails finally open and ready for use.

They took part in the unscored Deer River Invitational Tuesday at Blueberry Hills.

Had team scores been kept, Grand Rapids would have taken the boys 5k freestyle event with 35 points to 44 for Brainerd and 54 for Bemidji.

Jake Richards and Dylan Ramstad-Skoyles of DL finished 1-2, Richards winning by 35 seconds in 16:37.4.

Matt Lee led Bemidji in fifth with Tony Sagedahl 15, Adam Holter 17 and Kyle Sagedahl 18 to complete the scoring.

Eli Rassler was 22 in a field of 24.

Kelly Kjorlien of Grand Rapids took the girls title in 20:07.3 besting Bailey Drewes of Bemidji by 15 seconds.

Grand Rapids also finished 3-4-6 for 14 points to 38 for Bemidji, 43 for Brainerd and 64 for DL.

Molly Manske was 11 as the second Bemidji finisher with Laura Yourd 12 and Alicia Papke-Larson 13 .

Aaron Rosenberg of Grand Rapids won the boys JV title in 21:11.4, besting Cole Sundquist of Brainerd by 16 seconds.

For Bemidji, Matt Chatterton was fifth, John Buckanaga eighth, Trent Buckanaga 13 and Andy Berube 14 followed by Tanner Asper 15 and Devin Danielson16.

The girls JV title was won by Sarah Fairbanks of Brainerd in 23:30, well ahead of second place Kaitlin Bakker of Trek North in 23:58.2.

Grand Rapids finished 5-6-7-8 to outdistance the field.

For Bemidji, Kristina Lengerhuis was 20 and Anna Mangiamele 24 as the only two skiers.

The Junior High boys crown went to Noah Baker of Brainerd in 15:47.6 over a 3k route.

Jordan Wednchuk led Bemidji in third with Josh Claussen eighth, Matt Eriksson ninth, Austin Chatterton 10, Tanner Zaccagnino 13, Kyle Labernik 15, Kyle Johnson 17, Nolan Hamilton 19 and Tyler Verdugo 22.

Katie Montgomery of Brainerd won the girls Junior High race in 17:13.1. edging Holly Hutchins of Grand Rapids by two seconds.

For Bemidji, Morgan Sagedahl was seventh, California Thorson ninth. Anne Eriksson 15, Cassie Wednchuk 21, Lauren Weaver 24, Atomic Thorson 30 Amelia Hudson 32, Hannah Hamilton 33 and Ariel Tix 35.

Thursday the teams ski at the Arboretum at Brainerd with the varsities over a 10k pursuit format while the JV and Junior High races are 5k freestyle.
