Bemidji State hockey recruit Illo has two assists against Team USA at World Juniors

Bemidji State University men's hockey recruit Radoslav Illo had two assists in Slovakia's 7-3 loss to Team USA Saturday night in the IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship Group B opener for both teams in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

Both of his assists came on goals in the first period, which gave the Slovakians a brief 2-0 lead.

Illo currently plays junior hockey in the United States Hockey League for the Tri City Storm, where he has 13 goals and seven assists in 19 games played.

He was selected in the 5th round of the NHL Entry Draft by the Anaheim Ducks and is expected to join the BSU men's hockey program next fall for the inagural season in the WCHA.

John Carlson, Jeremy Morin, Derek Stepan, Matt Donovan, Danny Kristo, Jordan Schroeder and Jerry D'Amigo scored for the Americans.

Roseau native and St. Cloud State goalie Mike Lee had 13 saves for Team USA.

On Sunday, the Americans play Switzerland and Slovakia plays Latvia.

In the other Group B game in Saskatoon, Gabriel Bourque had three goals and four assists and five-time defending champion Canada romped to a 16-0 victory over Latvia.

Jake Allen made 10 saves for the shutout, while Canada had 66 shots on goal.

In Group B in Regina, Magnus Paajarvi-Svensson had a goal and four assists in Sweden's 10-1 victory over the Czech Republic. Anton Lander scored twice, and Jacob Markstrom made 20 saves for Sweden. In the night game, Yevgeni Kuznetsov scored two goals in Russia's 6-2 victory over Austria.
