Jacks sweep Rapids

The Bemidji High girls soccer team completed a regular season sweep Monday, traveling to Grand Rapids and emerging with a strong 4-1 victory.

The Jacks had defeated Grand Rapids 3-0 earlier in the year. Monday's win brought the Jacks back to the .500 mark for the season at 6-6-1.

The Jacks have established a history of being slow starters this season, but that was not the case Monday. BHS jumped out to a 3-0 first-half lead and never looked back in recording the win.

"The girls played fantastic the first 30 minutes or so of the game," said BHS head coach Kelly Schoonover. "All the players were constantly moving and putting the pressure on with many give and go passes.

"They really came together as a team. It was great to see as a coach -- they came off the bus ready to play and found success offensively because of it."

The Jacks ended the game with a huge 30-9 shots on goal advantage.

Bronwyn Boyd got the Jacks on the board first, connecting on an unassisted goal at the 10 minute mark. Grand Rapids goalie Morgan Bruns made the initial save and decided to hold the ball. But the ball somehow squirted free and Boyd was there to rap it home.

The Jacks made it 2-0 12 minutes later as Erin Booth scored off an assist from Caitlyn Blotske. Blotske found Booth with a nice lead pass and Booth zipped a rifle shot from beyond the 18 foot mark past Bruns.

With four minutes to go in the half the Jacks went ahead 3-0 as Andrea Hanson cashed in off a nice give and go play with Booth.

Grand Rapids finally found the back of the net 13 minutes into the second half as Karry Shepard scored off a header from closer range. But that was the only time BHS keeper Nicole Ramos would be beaten on the day.

The Jacks concluded the scoring at the 70 minute mark. Alexa Wang scored unassisted of a corner kick.

"It was really a well played game by our girls," Schoonover said. "This game really showed them the benefit of being ready to play from the opening whistle, and then continuing the intensity level throughout the game."

The Jacks return to action Thursday, traveling to East Grand Forks.

The Jacks junior varsity team lost its second one goal game to Grand Rapids this year, falling 2-1.

After a scoreless first half, Grand Rapids connected twice within an eight minute span to build an insurmountable lead.

The Jacks Bre Glyn scored on a breakaway at the 57 minute mark to make it a one goal game, but the Jacks would get no closer.

In a well contested defensive battle, Grand Rapids held a 10-9 shots on goal advantage. BHS keeper Whitney Morin made 8 saves on 10 Grand Rapids shots.

The Jacks fell to 2-7-2 on the year with the loss.
