Curb, Hegland lead Vandersluis

Bemidji's Chris Curb and Bruce Hegland of Apple Valley took the first day's lead at the 43rd annual Vandersluis Memorial golf tournament.

The pair fired one under par 71's over the Bemidji Town and Country Club course.

They took a one stroke lead over Jon Sauer of St. Cloud and two over Andy Brink of Eden Prairie and former BSU star Clint Cornell of Grand Rapids.

Defending champion Tom Jenkins of Maple Grove was one of four players at 74 tied with Kevin Krigbaum of Maple Grove and Toby Palmiscno of Bemidji.

Ray Sauer of St. Cloud paced the Senior Division at 71, two strokes ahead of Bemidji's Jeff Wiltse.

There was a heavy Bemidji flavor to the meet. Curb, Brink, Jenkins and Krigbaum are all Bemidji natives. Cornell and Palmiscno were BSU players.

Brink won the 1995, 1998 and 2004. titles. Jenkins is a four-time champ including last year. Johnny Larson, tied at 77, was the 2007 Birchmont winner.

In the Seniors, Sauer won the men's title in 1977 and 1980 and the Senior title in 2005.

The Walker native is another former BSU star and the father of Jon Sauer.

Three time Senior winner Joe Mayer of Bemidji had an opening 83. Glen Hasselberg of Staples, another BSU golfer of note, won the 2002 Seniors and was men's champion in 1983 and 86.

The opening round was played in near perfect weather conditions. More of the same is predicted for today and tomorrow.
