Blue Ox face Mudcats tonight for city title

The local Amateur baseball home season will draw to a close tonight when the Mudcats and Blue Ox battle at 7 at BSU for the mythical city championship.

For the first time in their brief three-year history, the Class C Blue Ox has carried the series to a third game, winning the opener 2-1 and losing the rematch 1-0 in a pair of pitchers battles.

Tonight's affair could be more of the same.

The two teams will enter play with different motives.

It will be the season finale for the Blue Ox which was forced to withdraw from the league playoffs when it was unable to field a team for the following week's region meet.

It had qualified for the league final against Roseau by beating Warroad 2-1 in the best of three series.

Without the ability to play at the regional, they with drew from the league final permitting Warroad to move to regional play.

For the Mudcats, tonight's game will be a warm up for the Region 6B tourney which will be played this weekend at Grand Rapids and Hibbing.

Blaine will join the five Arrowhead League teams to battle for two berths in the state meet which begins Aug. 20.

Manager Scott Seaton will use several of his moundsmen in short shifts tonight withholding Tyler Norland and Paul Fenner for the weekend openers.

Doug Peterson (1-1) who has turned in several fine relief appearances in recent weeks, will get the start with Matt Stasch and Dan Bauer other possibilities.

The Blue Ox will likely go with Cody Gross (2-4) or Justin Huether (3-0) with Matt Fossen (1-4) and Colton Smith (4-0) available.

The Blue Ox brings an 11-13 record into its final game. The Cats are 23-7-1.
