Baseball: Bemidji Legion sweeps Park Rapids

The Bemidji American Legion completed its finest week of the season Wednesday, taking a twin bill at Park Rapids 5-4 and 15-4 in sub-district play.

It lifted Bemidji to 6-8 on the year with two games remaining. Park Rapids fell to 1-11 with twin bills against Little Falls and Nisswa yet to play.

Bemidji ends its home season with double headers here with Perham July 6 and Brainerd July 7, the second of which ends the district y ear.

It then heads to the Gopher Classic to end its regular season.

Wednesday's opener was a close battle that ended 1-1 in regulation play.

Each team scored twice in the ninth and Bemidji added two runs in the tenth while holding Park Rapids to one.Simon Anderson worked the first five yielding a single run and three hits while fanning eight and walking none.

But Dylan Stenberg was just as tough giving up four hits and also no walks.

Tom Juberian gave Park Raids a 1-0 lead in the fourth when he belted a homer.

Bemidji got even in the fifth when Derek Lofgren reached on an error, was sacrificed to second and scored on Jeremiah Graves' single.

 Billy Statton took over mound duties in the sixth and added three more shutout innings. Kevin Vaadeland took over in the eighth for Park Rapids but left in the ninth after an error and two walks filled the bases.

Zach Anderson came on in relief and a passed ball and Paul Voss' sacrifice fly gave Bemidji 3-1 lead.

But an error gave PR hope in its at bat. Juberian followed with a single.

Statton got the next two outs but a double by Boterman cashed two runs and tied the game again.

In the tenth, Tyler Follis singled but was thrown out at the plate trying to score on a Cody Rutledge double.

But Anderson walked and Matt Hietala sent both runners home with another two bagger.

The home team did not go down quietly, however with a single by Erickson and an error opening the last of the tenth.

Cody Schirmers moved them up with a sacrifice and Dylan Walsh cashed Erickson with a sacrifice fly.

But Juberian flied to center to end the game.

Rutledge and Hietala had two hits for Bemidji. Juberian had a pair for the losers.

Bemidji blow out

The second game was a stark contrast with Bemidji running home eight runs in the first and closing with six in the fourth before the game ended.

Bemidji had only eight hits but profited from five walks and three errors.

An error started the big first and Follis doubled. Two walks followed and singles by Voss and Josh Kane before a free pass and Graves' single completed the carnage.

Park Rapids answered with two but Bemidji added a run in the second on Anderson's home run and another in the third on a walk, error hit batter and ground out.

Six more crossed in the fourth with a walk and two hit batters filling the bases. An error, ,another hit batter, Follis' double, a singles by Rutledge and Anderson followed.

Follis and Anderson had two hits for Bemidji. Park Rapids had only two.

Graves went the distance for his first win allowing only one earned run. He fanned two but walked five. Cory Odland went two innings to take the loss.

The sweep lifted Bemidji to 8-12 on the year.
