Baseball: Grand Rapids blanks Bemidji Mudcats

The Grand Rapids Indians scored three times in the first inning Thursday night and made the lead stand up to blank the Bemidji Mudcats 3-0 at Legion Field.

It snapped a seven-game winning string for the Cats and dropped them to 11-5-1. They face the Duluth Express in another Arrowhead League date Sunday date in a twin bill at Duluth.

The Rapids reached 4-1 in Arrowhead play and left Bemidji at 1-2.

The home team wrapped up the game quickly against Sam Anderson who worked the first six innings.

Bill Martinetto and Sam Sparen opened with singles. Manager James Brubaker doubled home Martinetto and Sparen followed on a wild throw home.

Brubaker got to third on the overthrow and scored on Kyle Figgins' ground out.

That was it for the Indians who managed only three hits the rest of the game. Their only minor threat came in the third when Brubaker singled and advanced to third when the ball got loose in right field.

Doug Peterson worked two scoreless frames in relief.

Bemidji had several scoring opportunities against Brubaker and Gabe Wood who pitched the ninth.

The Cats left runners at second or third in five frames.

Their best shot came in the seventh when Jeff Schaper and Peterson singled to open the frame and advanced on a sacrifice. But Brubaker got a pop to third and fly to center to leave them stranded. Wood retired the side in order in the ninth.

Ryan Johnson and Neil Huewe had two hits for Bemidji. Brubaker had two for the Rapids.

Paul Fenner (2-1) and Peterson (0-1) will get Sunday's starting calls. The next home game will be July 1 with Grand Rapids.

Bemidji welcomed back an old teammate Eric Monsrud who patrolled second base Thursday.
