Cass Lake-Bena baseball shoots for title, state tournament

The Cass Lake-Bena baseball team will play for the Section 8A Championship today and a berth in next week's Class A state tournament.

The Panthers will face Northern Freeze at 4 p.m. at the Mini Met on the campus of Northwest Community and Technical College in Thief River Falls.

It will be the first meeting between the two teams this season.

Cass Lake-Bena carries a 17-6-1 overall record into the game. Northern is 12-7 based on available information with three games unreported or rained out.

Cass Lake-Bena advanced to the title game by beating Win-E-Mac 8-2 in Tuesday's semifinals behind a two-run home run from Martin Wind and a dominant pitching performance by Tyler Trosen.

Cass Lake-Bena is the No. 2 seed out of the West subsection and was the subsection runner up. Win-E-Mac was a No. 5 seed and were champions of the East.

Northern shocked Fosston in the other semifinal on Tuesday and defeated the Greyhounds 7-6.

Northern is a No. 3 seed and runner up of the West subsection. Fosston was a No. 1 seed and champion of the East.

The loss was only Fosston's second of the season and ended a 14-game winning streak.

Cass Lake-Bena and Northern do share common opponents.

Northern lost both meetings to Win-E-Mac this season, 9-7 in the season opener and 11-6 in the subsection championship.

Northern lost to Fosston 5-4 in the regular season before defeating the Greyhounds in the semifinal Tuesday.

Cass Lake-Bena led Fosston 8-3 in the subsection championship last week before falling 10-8.

Cass Lake-Bena will likely send Trosen to the mound today. He is 7-0 this season for the Panthers.

He allowed two runs on two hits against Win-E-Mac, struck out eight and walked 10.

The Panthers have speed at the top of the order with Brett Finn leading off and Trosen in the No. 2 spot.

Martin Wind bats third, Mike Hanson bats cleanup and Nolan Goss bats fifth. All have power and experience that could be a factor in today's title game.

Should Cass Lake-Bena win, it would mark the second section title for the Panthers this season. The Cass Lake-Bena boys basketball team won the Section 8A title in March.

The winner of today's game advances to face the Section 6A champion (Hawley or Wheaton/Herman-Norcross) in one state quarterfinal next Thursday in Jordan.
