Section 8A baseball: Cass Lake-Bena, Blackduck advance

The Cass Lake-Bena and Blackduck baseball teams advanced to the Section 8A East Subsection semifinal round with victories Tuesday.

No. 2 seed Cass Lake-Bena hosted No. 7 Kelliher-Northome and defeated the Mustangs 7-2.

No. 3 seed Blackduck hosted No. 6 seed Walker-Hackensack-Akeley and defeated the Wolves 8-7.

Cass Lake-Bena will face Blackduck at BSU Baseball Field Thursday at 2:30 p.m. with the winner advancing to the subsection championship at 5 p.m.

Leading the Panthers Tuesday was Mike Hanson, who pitched five innings to earn his third win of the season. The senior also hit a 3-run home run.

Cass Lake-Bena led most of the way, breaking a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the third inning with three runs to go ahead 4-1.

The Mustangs responded with another run in the fourth, but again the Panthers scored three runs in the bottom of the inning to make it 7-2.

Leading the way in the Blackduck victory was Brandon Beck, who broke a 6-6 tie in the fifth inning with a two-out, two-run double that scored Tony Hoffman and Cody Bergquist.

Beck finished 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBIs. Brett Mistic was 3-for-4 with a run and two RBIs. Todd Kallroos was 3-for-4 with an RBI.

Leading WHA was Jake Karst, who finished 1-for-4 with a two-run home run.

Five other games were played in the section Tuesday night, but results were not immediately available.

Meeting Tuesday night in the East subsection was No. 1 seed Fosston against either No. 9 Laporte or No. 8 Red Lake.

No. 4 Nevis hosted No. 5 Lake of the Woods.

The winners of those two games advance to play in the semifinals at BSU Thursday at noon.

The section final four will be played June 2 and 4 at Northwest Community and Technical College.
