Hockey Day is coming to Bemidji; 13th annual event set for winter 2019

BHS baseball: Rain and cold shortens first day at Sagedahl Invite

After ten years, it had to come.

For the past ten seasons, the Des Sagedahl Invitational baseball tournament has run weather free with 60 games played during that period without a single postponement.

That all ended Friday night.

Duluth East and Fargo North battled through a misty rain and cold wind with temperatures falling into the mid 30s and snow threatening to start at any time.

That game started an hour late after a late afternoon rainstorm.

It ran for almost 2½ hours before the Greyhounds ended winning a 9-4 decision in a game not nearly that close.

Bemidji and favored Fargo South were listed to play the second game.

But the two coaches agreed that with no weather improvement foreseen, it would be senseless to risk injuries to their players to compete in that weather and cancelled the contest.

It will not be replayed.

The meet resumes this morning at 10 when Fargo North and South clash. Bemidji will meet Duluth East at noon with East and South clashing at 2 and Bemidji and North at 4.

A more reasonable time slot, however, will likely be 10, 12:30, 3 and 5:30.

The East-North game seemed likely to end after five.

The Greyhounds scored three runs in the first, third and fourth and rolled behind the one hit hurling of their ace, Adam Zwak to what appeared to be a 10 run game.

But they failed to score again.

Zwak left after four and Tyler Olin blanked the Spartans for two more frames before they erupted for four in the last of the seventh to drag the game out nearly an extra half hour.

They ended with seven hits to East's nine.

After playing errorless defense behind Zwak, East committed four down the stretch. North ended with six in a sloppily played game.

Much of that might be attributable to the weather.

Simon Anderson, slated to face South Friday, will go against East in Bemidji's opener today. Jeremiah Graves will hurl the North contest.
