High School Baseball: Panthers face Drakes tonight

The Cass Lake-Bena baseball team lost and tied in a doubleheader against Pine River on Monday.

Pine River won the first game of the set 6-2 and the two teams tied the second game 5-5.

Mike Hanson had five hits in the doubleheader to lead the Panthers.

Pine River overcame a 2-0 deficit with four runs in the fourth inning. The Tigers added two runs in the sixth for the final runs of the game.

Cass Lake-Bena overcame a 5-1 deficit in the second game with three runs in the fourth and one run in the fifth.

On Saturday, Cass Lake-Bena beat Nevis 4-0 behind a three-run second inning.

Cass Lake-Bena pitcher Tyler Trosen picked up his second win of the season with 12 strikeouts against the Tigers.

On Friday, Walker-Hackensack-Akeley defeated the Panthers 11-9 in a game that featured 20 hits.

Cass Lake-Ben had a 9-6 lead heading into the seventh and final inning.

But the Wolves rallied with five runs in the top of the inning and shutout the Panthers in the bottom of the inning to claim the win.

Hanson led the Panthers at the plate with three hits. Nolan Goss and Ryan Conner each had two hits.

Jake Karst led Walker with four hits, including one home run. Daniel Nelson added two hits for the Wolves.

The Panthers are now 7-3-1 overall this season and 5-3-1 in the Northland Conference.

Up next for Cass Lake-Bena is a showdown with Blackduck (9-1 overall, 7-2 Northland) tonight.

The Drakes are currently on a nine-game winning streak and have not lost since a 4-3 defeat to Nevis on April 16.

First pitch is set for 7 p.m. at BSU Baseball Field.
