BHS Tuesday preview: Baseball at Hibbing, tennis team hosts triangular

The Bemidji High baseball team is out to snap a four-game losing skid today when it heads to the Iron Range to battle Hibbing.

The tennis team, meanwhile, entertains East Grand Forks and Detroit Lakes in a triangular at the high school courts.

And the softball team is home with Thief River in a single game at 4:30.

Bemidji beat the Bluejackets 14-2 and 8-1 last year, the second game added to make up rainouts for both teams that could not be rescheduled.

Simon Anderson and Ryan Sullivan were the winners. Anderson will get today's starting call, taking a spotless 3-0 mark into play. He went seven innings against Grand Rapids in his last start, leaving in a 2-2 tie.

The Rapids went on to score four in the ninth to win.

It dropped the Jacks to 6-6. They have a good chance to reach 8-6 should they win today and beat Grand Forks Central Friday before heading to Alexandria Saturday for a more testing contest.

Billy Statton will be behind the plate today with Matt Hietala, Jeremiah Graves, Tyler Follis and Sol Schneider around the infield and Derek Lofgren, Nick Lee and Tony Baumgartner or Cody Rutledge in the outfield.

Auston Zetah could DH.

The B Team brings a 5-5 mark to its game. It lost an opportunity to add to its victory total when Saturday's Invitational at Thief River Falls was cancelled due to wet grounds.

Five different hurlers have each won one game this spring.

The C Team game with Hibbing has been cancelled with the Jackets not fielding a ninth grade team this year.

Tennis favored

The tennis team rules a favorite today against teams they have beaten earlier this year.

They take on East Grand Forks at 2 and Detroit Lakes at 5 with those two teams squaring off at 3:30.

Bemidji stopped the Green Wave 6-1 and DL 7-0 in their first meetings.

Bemidji is 8-2 after splitting two matches Saturday, bowing to Thief River 4-3 and blanking Monticello 7-0. That marked their fifth 7-0 victory in the eight wins.

Thief River beat the Jacks at their strength Saturday taking three of the four singles matches.

Bemidji, however, was using a revamped lineup, moving Levi Rickert and Adam Holter into doubles where Aaron Johnson was missing.

It will still be slightly revised today.

Against EGF he will start Ben Holter (12-0), Ryan Rude (11-2), Justin Byers (0-0) and Ben Kloha (3-1) in singles.

The doubles will pair Sam Weaver with Steve Bucher (1-0), Kyle Fodness with Adam Holter (3-0) and Levi Rickert with Justin Pierce (0-0)

In the DL match, playing singles will be Rude, Adam Holter (4-2), Bucher (1-2) and Wes Rogers (0-1).

In doubles, Weaver will pair with Ben Holter (3-1), Byers with Fodness (4-2) and Joey Wood with Kloha (0-0).

Other action today finds the boys and girls JV golf teams playing Wildflower at Detroit Lakes in a co-ed meet.
