BSU baseball: Marauders, Rain spoil home finale

The Bemidji State University baseball team played its final home game of the 2009 season Wednesday afternoon and lost to the University of Mary Marauders 15-0.

Game 2 was cancelled due to heavy rain and will not be rescheduled.

The University of Mary pounded out 14 hits with two doubles, a triple and one home run in the game. The Marauder pitching staff held Bemidji State to four hits.

The Marauders scored eight runs through the first two innings and never looked back.

UM scored in five of the seven innings plating one run in the first, seven in the second, two in the third, one in the fifth and four in the seventh. 

BSU managed just four hits, two singles by Justin Huether and a single by Ryan Sander and Paul Newman.

Kevin Morel started and picked up the loss for BSU. He allowed eight runs (five earned) on five hits with two walks and one strikeout in one inning of work.

Ethan Branum and Bryan Buhr pitched in relief.

Mary's Blaze Culliton improved his record to 2-5 on the season with a complete game four hit shutout. He struck out and walked four BSU batters.

BSU falls to 4-5 in the all-time series with the Marauders and are 0-3 when hosting U-Mary at the BSU Baseball Field.

The eleven BSU seniors who played in the final home were Anthony Turk, P.J. McIntee, Ryan Bohannan, Justin Huether, Bryan Buhr, Casey Allar, Josh Juntunen, Brent Vollbrecht, Kevin Morel, Paul Newman and Randy Amos.

Bemidji State falls 15-34 overall and finishes NSIC play 8-22 while the University of Mary improves to 9-29 overall and 6-12 in the conference.

The Beavers will wrap up its 2009 season with a four-game road series at Montana State University-Billings on Saturday and Sunday.

First pitch of Saturday's double-header is slated for 1 p.m. with Sunday's double-dip beginning at noon.
