Bemidji High School baseball: Season opens Saturday at St. Cloud

The Bemidji Lumberjacks, tired of waiting for a dry field, head to St. Cloud today to begin its new season, facing Sauk Rapids at 1 at the municipal athletic complex and coming next door to meet Sartell at 4.

Those games were to have been part of the Northland Jamboree at Bemidji. Moorhead was the fourth team to face the two St. Cloud area opponents in the reverse order.

Presumably, the Spuds will be on hand at St. Cloud today.

Bemidji has hardly seen the outdoors in its three weeks of practice. Both its first two starters were victims of the late season blizzard.

The Brainerd opener will be replayed April 18 and the Grand Rapids game April 28. Brainerd will again be the home opener.

Today's games will be the first of 20 during the regular season.

Mike Fogelson starts his fifth season with a 45-43 record.

His only losing year came last spring when the Jacks ended 7-15 blanked by oorhead and Brainerd in the sub-section.

Scoring, or the lack of same, was the chief Bemidji problem last year averaging less than four runs a game.

Bemidji managed two runs or less 12 times last season going 3-9 in those contests. Seven times they were blanked.

But 12 members of the tournament team are back, 10 of them seniors, who should add experience.

Simon Anderson will head the mound staff. He was 2-4 last year but sported a classy 1.31 earned run average. Reliever Alex Hengel is the only other pitcher who won a game.

Sophomore Tyler Follis will start the second game today with several of the tenth grade crew likely to battle into the starting cast before the season ends.

Other veterans back are Sol Schneider, Nick Lee, Derek Lofgren, Trevor Andrews, Billy Statton, Auston Zetah and Tony Baumgartner.

Another senior gave up the sport.

B Team leader Ryan Stevens, sidelined with a leg injury, is expected back shortly.

He could add more depth to the mound staff.

Lofgren and Lee are outfield regulars; Junior Josh Kane could be the third. Anderson will man the outfield when not pitching.

A probable starting lineup today will find Anderson (,237) on the mound with Statton (.045) behind the plate. Matt Hietala (.000) will be at first, Graves (.171) at second, Follis at short and Schneider (.078) at third.

Lofgren (.321) will be in left, Lee (.171) in center and Kane in right.

Others who could see action include Andrews (.286), Baumgartner (.200), Zetah (.171) and Hengel (.071).

Highlights of the season include a Metrodome game with Thief River April 17, a twin bill against Eagan and Eden Prairie at Grand Rapids April 24 and the season-ending Des Sagedahl Invitational May 15-16 with Duluth East and Fargo North and South returning.

The sub-section will be May 25.-27-28 with the section finals at St. Cloud May 30, June 1.

The state will return to St, Paul June 11-12 using both Midway Stadium and Siebert Field.
