Bemidji High School girls basketball: Jacks beat Rocori for 20th win of the season

The Bemidji High girls basketball team rebounded from its loss at East Grand Forks Tuesday to roll over outmatched Rocori 84-40 Saturday at Cold Spring.

Bemidji had few problems with the Spartans who fell to 2-21 on thee year. Bemidji extended its season to 20-3.

It hosts Detroit Lakes Tuesday and Grand Rapids Thursday to complete its regular season.

It jumped ahead 21-9 at the start, allowed an eight point Spartan run, then moved gradually to a 41-24 lead at halftime.

Kayla Hirt had 13 at this juncture as the host team found no way to defense the big center in the paint.

Things got worse after the break as Bemidji opened with a 20-6 start go ahead 61-30 and shortly afterward added a 10-2 run to start the clock running with 8:30 to play.

There was no letdown the rest of the way despite a rash of reserves on the floor.

Hirt ended with 28 to reach 565 on the season. Paige Jensen followed with 14. Eight others finished between 2-9 with Megan Larson getting nine and Abby Hendricks a season high eight.

Bemidji held a strong 38-19 bulge off the boards and committed only 10 turnovers to 23 for the Spartans.

Coach Rick Kehoe was far from pleased with the girls first half defense and spent the entire halftime stressing the need for picking up in this department.

The talk bore results with Rocori making only 16 points after the beak never more than one bucket at a time.

"Defense will get us to the state," he repeated. "We'll see how good we can be on defense this week, especially against Grand Rapids. The Hawks handed Bemidji its first loss of the year 66-54 at the Rapids.

The 84 points were a season high, two over the 82 Bemidji recorded against Pequot Lakes.

B. C Teams win

Bemidji swept the preliminaries, the B Team winning 41-33 and the C Team 83-38.

The JV trailed 18-12 at halftime but won with a strong second half..

Grace Felling led with a season high nine points. Selina Gilbertson added eight.

The Frosh hit a season high 83 with Jess Yost scoring a record 47 points. Kenzie Kane added 20.
