Bemidji High School boys hockey: Jacks beat Greenway, capping off first winning season in eight years
The Bemidji Lumberjacks hockey team went out in a blaze of glory Thursday night, steamrolling undermanned Greenway 12-3 before a small senior night turnout at The Glas.
It cemented the first winning season for the Jacks in eight years, raising their record to 13-11-1 entering tournament play.
Bemidji will open in the late Friday game against the Lake of the Woods-Bagley winner.
Bemidji was seeded third.
First round games will pare the field to eight on Tuesday night.
Bemidji warmed to the task slowly Thursday, skating to a 1-1 tie in the first period despite firing 18 shots on goal.
The lack of success brought about a spirited "fireside chat" by coach Wade Chiodo between periods.
It didn't take effect immediately but once Bemidji gained control it quickly put the game away.
Tied 2-2 four minutes into the second stanza, Bemidji unleashed a six goal barrage, three in a 30 second period, to end all doubts of the outcome.
It started running time in the final stanza which was played quickly with the Jacks adding three more goals to the winning margin. Eight different players scored.
Freshman Brady Devescovi and junior Rylee Curb led with hat tricks..
Mike Rees, Jesse Nemgar, Luke Burns, Max Hazelton, Lucas Phillips and Jared Bergquist scored once.
Nemgar added four assists for his third five-point contest this year and second in succession.
Derek Dudgeon worked the first period and a half with 11 stops. Brett Dokken finished with eight for a game total of 19.
The Raiders also used two goalies who kicked back 37.
Coleraine ended perhaps its longest season in history with three wins in 25 starts. Garrett Ohrn, a quality defenseman, had two goals. Tyler Nielsen scored the third.
The visitors skated only two lines and three defensemen most of the night and wore down as the game went along. Bemidji skated four lines with four defensemen with Isaac Bitter sitting out the game with an injury.
Bemidji went 3-3 on the power play, its first perfect night of the year. The Raiders failed to convert on their lone try.
The B Team ended 16-8-1 with a 6-1 win. Steve Heller hit twice and Jake White, Chris Isensee, Shane Teigland and Jake Walters once.
Senior Garrett Reinarz went the distance in goal, his first start of the year, and turned back seven shots., Erik Arnason had 54 stops for the losers.
The fans said farewell to Reinarz and varsity seniors Bergquist, Chris Blotske, Kris Maggert, Dudgeon and Dokken. Fifteen other players will return for the 2010 season.
