Pioneer Staff Report

BEMIDJI — The Bemidji State University women’s hockey team defeated Minnesota State 4-1 Friday at the Sanford Center.

The win gave the Beavers a 5-6-2 overall and 2-4-1 Western Collegiate Hockey Association record while the Mavericks dropped to 3-7-0 and 0-7-0.

The Beavers struck first with a goal at the 4:14 mark by Allie Duellman, her second in as many games.

The Mavericks answered with 5:30 left in the first stanza on an unassisted goal by Kari Lundberg.

BSU’s penalty-kill was tested three times in the first period but BSU was able to keep the visitors off the board.

In the second period Bemidji State out-shot the Mavericks 17-6 but the Mavericks defense stopped all the shots except the last one. Rachael Kelly scored with just two seconds remaining in the period on a power play. Ivana Bilic and Lauren Miller both chipped in assists on the goal.

Bemidji State added two insurance goals in the third period as Kaitlyn Tougas and Hanna Moher scored.

Brittni Mowat tended the BSU net and earned her fifth win overall and second in WCHA play. Mowat’s record improved to 5-5-2.

The Beavers and Mavericks will conclude their weekend series at 2:07 p.m. today.
