BEMIDJI — When the season began in mid-August Bemidji cross country coach Ryan Aylesworth thought his girls and boys teams could challenge for section championships.

Tuesday afternoon at Greenwood Golf Course the regular season concluded and, after the two teams defeated Moorhead in dual action, Aylesworth’s opinion hasn’t changed.

The boys downed the Spuds 20-35 behind the individual championship of Sam Carlson and the 3-4-5 finishes of Caleb Appleton, Billy Freyholtz and Noah Holter.

The Lumberjacks also tripped Moorhead in the girls dual 24-31. Jenna Truedson was the overall winner and Sadie Hamrin claimed second. Also placing in the top five was Megan Serratore.

“We had a very good day,” Aylesworth said. “It was cold and wet but we had a good day.”

Carlson claimed the 5-K boys run with a time of 16:28.29 and won the race by 28 seconds. Appleton completed the course in 16:56.72 while Freyholtz posted a time of 17:15.81 and Holter 17:24.53.

“The boys are starting to run like I knew they could and are performing like we want them to,” Aylesworth said. “At this point in the season we want to get everybody firing together and on Tuesday the kids ran how I thought they could.”

Truedson wasn’t challenged Tuesday as the junior coasted to the win with a time of 14:52.47. Hamrin finished second in 15:23.59 while Serratore was clocked in 15:38.03.

“The girls are starting to jell as a unit and gaining confidence in what they are doing and that is translating into quality performances,” the coach said. “Moorhead is a very good team and a very good program and it was important for us to do well against them. We can use this meet as a confidence booster when we meet Moorhead in the section meet.”

That competition will be Oct. 24 at Detroit Lakes.
