Girls swimming: Depth, talent carry Bemidji to section True Team title

BEMIDJI — Bemidji girls swimming and diving coach Woody Leindecker has been tweaking the lineup all season and the trend continued Saturday when the Lumberjacks hosted the Section 8A True Team meet.

The True Team format emphasizes numbers and encourages coaches to fill all of their available slots. Bemidji’s plan on Saturday was to take advantage of that opportunity by moving some of the junior varsity swimmers into varsity competition.

Leindecker also wanted to examine the potential of his relay teams so he sacrificed some individual event points by placing his veterans in three relays instead of the customary two.

The results showed that BHS has talent and overall strength as the Lumberjacks captured the True Team crown with 1,520.5 points. Fergus Falls was second with 1,368 and park Rapids placed third with 1,360.

Bemidji won all three relay races and setting the tone was the 200 medley relay unit of Erin Arndt, Danielle Hoven, Libby McRae and Morgan Williams. The foursome combined for a winning time of 1:57.15.

The teammates also joined forces to win the 200 free relay (1:44.49) and the 400 free relay (3:53.86), claiming the latter event by a whopping nine seconds.

The Jacks also fared well in the individual events.

Kylei Grosfield continued her dominance on the board as she took the diving with 446.95 points. Arndt placed second in the 500 free (6:00.20) and Madi Knutson duplicated that result in the 100 back (1:07.20).

Hoven was third in the 200 individual medley and Williams tied for third in the 50 free. Contributing fifths were Jenna Hendricks in the 200 free and Mackenzie Ritchie in the 200 IM.
