ST. CLOUD — The Bemidji State men’s hockey team began the 2013-14 season in much the same way as their 2012-13 season ended — another one-goal loss.

This time, it was Nic Dowd’s second-period shorthanded goal that proved to be the difference as St. Cloud State edged Bemidji State 3-2 in the season opener for both teams Friday at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center.

“You wanna sit there and break a lot of things down, but it was their best players that beat us,” BSU head coach Tom Serratore told Beaver Radio Network following the game. “Joey Benik scored two and Nic Dowd got one. Plus, they beat us on special teams.”

The Huskies (1-0-1) scored once on the power play in the first period and then got the shorthanded tally from Dowd. Those proved crucial, especially after BSU rallied to tie the game at 2-2 in the second period.

In the second frame, the Huskies made it 2-0 with Benik’s second goal of the game — this one coming off a strange deflection behind the BSU net. It took a funny bounce and BSU goaltender Andrew Walsh was out of position, allowing Benik to score an easy goal from his right side.

But the Beavers (0-1-0) rallied with two straight scores late in the period.

Sophomore Markus Gerbrandt scored BSU’s first goal of the season at the 10:43 mark, while fellow sophomore Cory Ward netted the equalizer at 14:38.

That gave the Beavers some momentum, but it didn’t last long — even though they had a prime opportunity to take the lead minutes later.

At the 15:30 mark of the period St. Cloud State’s Andrew Prochno went to the penalty box after interfering with Phillip Marinaccio in front of the St. Cloud State net.

However, a bad pass by a Beaver near the blue line during the man advantage ended up right on the stick of St. Cloud State’s Cory Thorson.

Dowd easily beat Walsh following a 2-on-1, giving the Huskies the 3-2 lead on the shorthanded goal.

Benik scored the first goal of the game after BSU’s Sam Rendle was whistled for an interference penalty just 3:30 into the game.

Just 9 seconds into the man advantage he beat Walsh to make it 1-0.

But BSU rallied later in the period, killing off another penalty and finishing the frame trailing just 7-6 on shots.

In the third period the Beavers didn’t get many chances to tie the game — the Huskies outshot them 11-1 — but had some fantastic chances in the final two minutes of the game.

Rendle and Jeff Jubinville each had shots that want wide of St. Cloud goaltender Ryan Faragher with under a minute to go but just as Walsh was skating off the ice for an extra attacker, the Beavers were whistled for another penalty.

Jubinville went to the box for interference at 19:17 and Rendle followed him for tripping at 19:58, effectively ending any chance BSU had to win.

St. Cloud outshot BSU 29-16 in the game; Walsh finished with 26 saves while Faragher stopped 14 shots.

The two teams return to the ice at 7:07 p.m. today to close out their nonconference series.
