AREA HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: Pine River-Backus on top of Northstar East football

BAGLEY — Pine River-Backus is ruling the roost of the Northstar Conference’s East Division as the Tigers remained unbeaten last week with a 43-7 victory over Bagley.

The loss dropped Bagley into a four-way tie for second with a 2-3 record. Sharing that mark with the Flyers are Cass Lake-Bena, Blackduck and Pillager.

Still winless in five games are Red Lake and Walker-Hackensack-Akeley.

Mahnomen is 5-0 in the West Division but on its heels are Lake Park-Audubon and Red Lake County which are 4-1.

Fertile-Beltrami and Frazee own 3-2 records while Prairie Valley is 2-3 and Fosston is 1-4.

Last week’s results also saw CL-B lose 40-0 to Fertile-Beltrami, Blackduck blank WHA 38-0, Pillager down Prairie Valley 23-14, Mahnomen blitz Red Lake 67-6, Lake Park-Audubon trip Fosston 29-20 and Red Lake County edge Frazee 20-14.

Pine River sped to a 14-0 lead against Bagley by scoring on its first two possessions. The Flyers found the end zone midway through the second period when Jordan Loiland connected with Justin Olson on a 10-yard touchdown pass. Walker Cage booted the PAT and Bagley trailed only 14-7.

But the Flyers would get no closer as Pine River scored 29 unanswered points to regain control.

Loiland completed 16 of his 24 passes for 151 yards and the touchdown. Jake Skansberg caught six of the passes for 76 yards and Walker Cage grabbed a pair for 41 yards.

Friday’s schedule finds Bagley visiting Prairie Valley, Cass Lake-Bena traveling to Blackduck and Red Lake heading to Fertile-Beltrami.

Kelliher-Northome improved to 5-0 last week in the Great Northern Conference after defeating Onamia 26-14. The Mustangs share that record with Floodwood and the leaders own a two-game edge over Cromwell, Hill City, Nevis and Onamia which are all 3-2.

This week sees Kelliher-Northome heading to Hill City while Floodwood hosts McGregor (2-3).

In the Top of the State Conference, Clearbrook-Gonvick dipped to 2-2 (3-2 overall) when it lost 37-36 to Goodridge-Grygla last week.

The Bears will hope for a better result Friday when they entertain Kittson County Central.


Nevis and Walker-Hackensack-Akeley top the Northland Conference volleyball standings as each is 4-0 in league play.

Overall Nevis is 11-3 while the Wolves are 11-5.

Pine-River Backus holds third place at 3-1 while Blackduck is 3-2, Cass Lake-Bena 2-3 and Laporte 2-4.

Trailing the leaders are Red Lake at 0-3 and Northome-Kelliher at 0-5.

First place will be on the line today when WHA travels to Nevis. Cass Lake-Bena will also be in action today as it hosts Clearbrook-Gonvick.
