BIRCHMONT: Mayer completes championship run
BEMIDJI -- Joe Mayer of Bemidji successfully defended his Masters Championship title Saturday as he defeated Chuck Hiller of Crookston 2 and 1.
"I played steady," Mayer, who was on his way to a 77 when the match ended on No. 17, said. "I didn't play great but I played well enough to win."
As were most golfers who competed on Saturday, Mayer is relieved that he doesn't have to play another match today.
"The weather hasn't been perfect for golf, especially for us in the Masters division (65 years of age and older). I'm glad the tournament is over," he said.
"But I'm also proud of the accomplishment," Mayer added. "My goal all week was to keep it in the fairway and not make double-bogeys. For the most part I was able to do that."
In the consolation final Bill Enghauser of Bemidji defeated Jim Kennelly of Bemidji.
