BSU baseball players head to summer ball

BEMIDJI -- Three Bemidji State baseball players are getting the chance to extend their seasons into the summer.

BSU junior pitcher Jack Hegarty, sophomore outfielder Tyler Nelson and freshman first baseman Mason Bellew have all joined collegiate wood bat leagues for the summer.

Hegarty, a Brainerd native, joined the Willmar Stingers of the Northwoods league Wednesday as a relief pitcher. The Stingers went 23-12 in the first half of the season, finishing second in the North Division. They're currently 5-7 in the season's second half.

Hegarty went 3-0 on the mound last season for the Beavers with a 3.24 ERA in 12 appearances. He also led the team in saves with two. In 25.0 innings pitched. He also won an NSIC Gold Glove award playing shortstop and second base.

Hegarty is the first Beaver to play in the Northwoods League since Nick Jelacie, who played for Brainerd before that franchise folded in 2011. Hegarty will, however, be joining former BSU player and coach, P.J. McIntee in Willmar. McIntee is an assistant for the Stingers and played for the Beavers from 2005-09.

Bellew, Nelson in Kansas

Meanwhile, Nelson and Bellew have found success for the North Central Kansas Knights of the Walter Johnson League.

Both Nelson and Bellew redshirted for the Beavers in 2013, but are making the best of their opportunities for the Knights.

In 91 at bats, Nelson owns a .286 batting average with 15 RBIs and 14 runs scored. His RBI total and five doubles both rank second on the team.

Bellew owns a .295 average at the plate with 13 hits, seven runs scored and six walks. He has appeared in 17 games, mostly playing first base.

Former Beaver Trevor Purvis (2011-13) has also joined the Knights for their regional play.

The Knights, located in Salina, Kan., are 10-25 this season.
