Bemidji VFW splits recent games
BEMIDJI — The Bemidji VFW baseball team split a pair of doubleheaders last week.
On Tuesday at the Bemidji State University diamond the Vets defeated East Grand Forks 9-4 after dropping the opener 5-4.
Thursday at Thief River Falls Bemidji lost 9-8 in eight innings but claimed the nightcap 11-5.
In Tuesday’s first game Bemidji spotted East Grand Forks a 5-1 lead but a single run in the sixth and two in the seventh brought the Vets within reach. Bemidji had the tying and winning runs on base in the bottom of the seventh but the VFW rally ended on a fly ball to the outfield.
The VFW scored its first run in the fourth on singles by Tony Geerdes, Dan Johnson and Austin Weidemann and a walk to Grant Kapaun.
In the bottom of the sixth Weidemann singled and Kapaun doubled him home. Bemidji scored its final two runs in the seventh on a pair of walks, Grant Carlson’s single and a fielder’s choice.
Bemidji’s offense fared better in the nightcap as it produced four runs in the second and fifth innings.
Weidemann singled in a run in the first inning and Geerdes singled home a teammate in the second. That stanza also featured Brady Larson’s bases-loaded walk and a pair of RBI fielder’s choices.
The Vets iced the win with four runs in the fifth. The stanza included Cam Boen’s squeeze bunt and RBI walks to Brady Johnson and Geerdes.
Thursday at Thief River Falls Bemidji tied the first game 8-8 with two runs in the seventh but the home team countered with the winning tally in the eighth.
The VFW took a 5-3 lead with four in the fourth and keying the frame were RBI singles by Ben Thompson and Thompson. Thief River Falls regained the advantage with four in the lower sixth but Bemidji forced extra innings on a walk to Kapaun, Cody Anderson’s triple and a wild pitch.
The home team won the game, however, with the help of a bases-loaded balk.
In Thursday’s rematch Bemidji broke a 4-4 deadlock with five runs in the fifth. The inning included Geerdes’ 2-run double.
Dylan Parsons helped ice the victory with a 2-run single in the sixth.
Geerdes contributed a pair of doubles and a single while Weidemann ripped an RBI triple.
