BASEBALL ROUNDUP: Bemidji Legion completes sweep

BEMIDJI — The Bemidji Legion baseball team ended a long Thursday night on the Bemidji State University diamond on a positive note as it completed a sweep of Fergus Falls with a 2-1 victory.

The Legion began the night with a 14-10 win and the teams didn’t complete the rematch until after 10:30 p.m.

Bemidji (4-6) forged a 1-0 lead in the second inning on Erik Fitzgerald’s double and Nick Hovila’s single. The Legion maintained that advantage until the visitors tied the game in the top of the seventh on a walk, bunt and a double.

The Legion tallied the winner in the bottom of the eighth, however. Tony Geerdes began the inning with walk and Mitch Buckanaga bunted him to second. Parker Lucas followed with an infield single and Geerdes scored when the throw to first was misplayed.

Lucas and Buckanaga each collected a pair of singles.

Blackduck splits

BAGLEY — The Blackduck Legion team split a doubleheader Thursday night, dropping the first game 4-3 but taking the rematch 6-3.

In the opener the home team tied the game in the seventh when Kyle Lavine was hit by a pitch and eventually scored on a fielder’s choice. Bagley notched the game-winner in the bottom of the eighth on a hit batter, a single, a stolen base and a ground ball.

Evan Weisert pitched the first five innings for Blackduck and Jake Krabbenhoft took the loss in relief. Zach Thoma went the distance on the Bagley mound.

In the nightcap Blackduck (7-3) claimed a 3-1 lead in the second inning and never looked back.

Trevor Smith and Dewy Nissen pitched and Tanner Depew paced the offense with three hits and two RBIs.
