Bemidji Blue Ox sweep Nevis

BEMIDJI — The Blue Ox erupted for 43 runs and 34 hits Sunday and cruised to a sweep of Nevis at the Bemidji State University diamond.

Bemidji took the first game 21-11 behind the four-hit effort of Ryan Sander. In the nightcap Matt Baier went 4-fo-4 to power the Blue Ox to an 18-3 victory.

The Blue Ox (7-2-1) wasted no time in kick-starting its offense. Singles by Baier, Sander and Joel Conway set the state for a pair of runs in the first inning of the opener and the Blue Ox transformed a pair of errors, four walks and a hit batter into four runs in the second.

The Blue Ox cemented the win with five runs in the fourth, Keying the inning were Baier’s RBI double and Sander’s run-scoring single.

Sol Schneider and Sander contributed RBI singles in the sixth and Sander capped the scoring with a 3-run ground-tripper in the seventh.

Sander finished with five RBIs and scored four runs. Baier drove in four and scored twice while Duane Biehn scored three times and Shawn Whiting, Jordan Sweep, Sol Schneider and Matt Schneider scored twice.

Sander worked the first five innings on the Blue Ox mound to post the victory.

Bemidji continued its dominance in the rematch as the Blue Ox scored two in the first inning and put the game away with 10 in the fifth.

Whiting had an RBI single and Sander a run-scoring triple to highlight the first inning.

The fifth inning featured two hits by Chris Conway, singles by Whiting, Simon Anderson, Sam Dwyer, Baier and Joel Conway plus Sander’s double.

Baier added an RBI double in the sixth and Sol Schneider ripped a 2-run home run in the seventh.

Anderson worked the first three innings and Baier earned the pitching victory with four innings of relief.

The Blue Ox return to duty 7 p.m. today when it hosts Cass Lake.
