DNR to step up boat patrol for weekend

BEMIDJI — The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources will step up patrol for impaired boaters Friday through Sunday, according to a press release from the DNR. “Operation Dry Water,” a national weekend of boating while intoxicated education and enforcement, is directed toward reducing alcohol and drug-related accidents and fatalities.

Impaired boating is one of the leading factors for boating accidents and injuries in Minn. and across the nation. In 2012, alcohol was a factor in 33 percent of deadly boating accidents in the state.

Boaters caught operating under the influence will have their boat impounded. Additional penalties can include arrest, fines and loss of boating privileges.

Operating a boat with a blood alcohol level (BAC) .08 or higher is against the law.
