April Kingbird and Joey McNeal will represent the Red Lake Youth Fishing League July 19-25 at the inaugural High School Fishing World Finals at Lake Dardanelle State Park in Russellville, Ark. The event is promoted by the Bass Federation.

"April and Joey possess the skills and determination to compete at the national level. They are the best the Red Lake Youth League has produced," said Darwin Summer, the league coordinator.

Kingbird, 17, and McNeal, 15, have competed in numerous Minnesota youth tournaments and the state Junior Bassmasters Tournament.

"Fishing is a part of our culture and a way of life in Red Lake," Summer said.

McNeal and Kingbird will leave for Arkansas on Saturday and pre-fish until Wednesday. The competition begins July 22.

"High school fishing is one of the fastest growing sports and we believe this event will further support a growth trend in every state," said Mark Gintert, the youth director of the Bass Federation.

Anglers representing 20 states qualified for the tournament.
