Master Gardeners to sponsor tour

Every other year, the Beltrami County Master Gardeners offer the public the opportunity to stroll around some of the area's most beautiful gardens.

This year, the tour will also feature works by local artists Jane Freeman, Pat Grimes and Pat Nelson. The tour will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 9.

Tickets go on sale Saturday for the tour. They cost $10 and are available at Tea and Gift Shoppe, 514 Beltrami Ave. N.W. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Tickets are limited and sold on a first-come-first-served basis.

Master Gardeners will be on hand at each of the seven gardens on the tour to answer questions and identify plants. Proceeds from the tour will be used for horticulture education in Beltrami County.

The gardens on the tour are as follows:

-- Bob and Ireta Larson, 807 Third St. N.E.

-- Mary Ellen Olson, 612 Kay Ave.

-- Jim and Carol Perish, 2515 S. Lake Irving Drive.

-- Wai Lun Chan and Bob Henretta, 418 Roosevelt Road.

-- Gary and Lizbeth Johnson, 3006 Birchmont Drive N.E.

-- Gerald Schnabel, 2020 Birchmont Drive N.E.

-- Stan and Ann Daley, 2118 Birchmont Drive N.E.

The Daleys gave a preview tour of the flower gardens they grow on the bluff above Lake Bemidji. Stan, a retired Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Fisheries specialist, said they have lived in their home for about 30 years, but only began serious gardening recently.

They have patios and decks of various levels setting off pocket gardens ornamented with curiosities, such as petrified wood, a ceramic heron, duck decoys and tiles salvaged from the demolition of Ancker Hospital in St. Paul, where Ann served as a nurse.

"We still have an IV standard we use for a bird feeder," she said.

Freeman will show her art at the Daleys' garden, Grimes will be at Schnabel's and Nelson will be at Olson's.
