05/11/2008 12:00 AM What a difference a year can make. If you recall, April 2007 in the northland was very mild; ice-out and leaf-out was early. In fact, by the first week of May most of the quaking aspen and cottonwood were entirely leafed out, oaks were well on their way, and chokecherry trees were blooming everywhere. It was an early spring in northern Minnesota to be sure.

The 2008 fishing season will open at 12:01 am Saturday morning, whether there is ice left on the lakes or not. The season opens Saturday for walleyes, northern pike and trout in lakes, with the opener for bass (May 24) and muskies (June 7) later this spring.
Sparrows and their allies are passing through

Old Sam Peabody has been stopping by lately. I normally see him every year about this time, including autumn. He’s a pleasant looking fellow with a fine disposition and the sweetest voice you’ve ever heard. Singing, you see, is his forte, and anyone hearing his medley won’t likely forget it. Yes, Old Sam Peabody is another of my favorite birds: the white-throated sparrow.
