LETTER TO THE EDITOR: We owe it to shooting victims to act on gun issue
My heart aches over the shooting at the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, Texas, and especially for the lives of the children lost to a gunman who should never have had a weapon in the first place.
What is wrong with us? We console the victims by saying, “You are in our hearts and prayers” until the next shooting when we repeat the same meaningless words. Do we think these words will put an end to this senseless violence?
We put on sad faces and whisper our sorrows but do nothing about gun violence. Even our “president” refuses to talk about the gun issue and says now is not the time. He claims it’s a “mental health” issue, which is refuted by mental health experts. No, it’s a gun issue. Guns kill and it takes a human being to pull the trigger.
When will the time be to act? The time is now! We owe it to the victims. Call or email your congress representatives and demand they do more than say, “We’re sorry for your loss.”
