LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Where will the next four-year journey lead?
If we don't know where we've been, it’s hard to know where we are going. Collective Amnesia is dangerous.
About 16 years ago our country experienced a very close election between Bush and Gore. The economy was good and we were at peace.
Eight years later our country was on the edge of a depression, unemployment was at 10 percent, foreclosures were high, along with a banking crisis. Heating oil and gas were about $3 a gallon and we were bogged down in two unnecessary, unwinnable wars after our massive invasions of two sovereign Muslim countries. Respect for our nation was low because of reckless wars and use of interrogation techniques considered torture by other civilized nations. This was the state of our nation eight years ago.
Now, before the most recent election, unemployment was at 4.6 percent, banks are stable (increased regulations), gas and home heating oil a little over $2 a gallon ($50 barrel of oil), interest rates low, alternative energy up (due partially to regulations) and the auto industry has been rescued. Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid are stable, providing what people need to live, and millions more people have health insurance or are more protected from the insurance companies’ greed. Consumer prices are low because of global trade, allowing lower middle class families to live a comfortable life.
At this time, we have a very small number of our brave soldiers in harm's way and no massive invasions of Muslim countries, (what our enemies want, Christian versus Muslim war; the trap they laid for Bush and he fell right into it.) Instead, we've "eliminated" many of our enemies, including Osama bin Laden, the mastermind of 9/11. Iran is no longer months away from having a nuclear bomb. We've done this through the use of our unique strengths: intelligence gathering and the "smart" use of lethal power. Global respect for our nation is high because of thoughtful, restrained use of lethal power. Our patriotic intelligence agencies like the CIA, FBI and 15 other agencies have kept us safe from major terrorist attacks like 9/11.
So this is now where we start a new four-year journey. No matter who you voted for, I challenge you to fight Collective Amnesia.Don FosterBagley
