Hockey Day is coming to Bemidji; 13th annual event set for winter 2019

Pioneer Editorial: Cheers and Jeers

Cheer: Day of Play stresses activity

Among the many family-friendly programs the Bemidji Parks and Recreation Department has developed Saturday's worldwide Day of Play and Moving Planet activities rank high. Children enjoyed bounce houses, games, canoeing and other events at the Lake Bemidji Waterfront, and bicyclists rode on the lake trail to emphasize the need to limit dependence on fossil fuels. In addition to Parks and Rec, the events were sponsored by a collaboration of Bemidji Jaycees and Active Living Bemidji.

Cheer: Setting a record

At exactly high noon Sept. 17, 25 gymnasts and friends of Bemidji's Gym Bin simultaneously performed handstands on the grass of City Park. The maneuver resulted in a new record of 20,478 handstands performed at the same time nationwide.

Jeer:Guilty as charged

A former flight attendant has pleaded guilty to starting a fire aboard an airplane and forcing an emergency landing in Fargo. Authorities say the suspect started a fire in the bathroom of a 2008 Compass Airlines flight from Minneapolis to Regina, Saskatchewan, because he was unhappy he had to work the route. The suspect walked away from a Fargo halfway house in 2008 and was a fugitive for nearly three years. He was arrested in Mexico in March. Flight attendants are charged with passenger safety. To jeopardize safety for any reason, especially in a fit of pique, is indefensible.

Cheer: Good wishes

Bob LeBarron, who led the Bemidji Regional Event Center from the early stages of construction to a fully functioning sports and entertainment venue, has announced his intentions to move on from his position with VenuWorks. We wish LeBarron - the Sanford Center's first and only executive director - good luck as he seeks new opportunities.
