Paul Ericsson: ‘Gardening 101’ returns to the Bemidji Public Library

While the daytime temps are not even getting above zero and thoughts of warm weather are only a dream -- it is time to start planning for our gardens. We are proud to announce the return of the “Gardening 101” lecture series presented in collaboration with the Friends of the Bemidji Public Library and the Beltrami County Master Gardeners. These mid-day programs are a great way to shake off our winter cabin fever and to get a shot of hope that spring will return. And they are very informative. Beverages will be provided so feel welcome to bring a brown bag lunch. The program dates and topics are:

· Feb. 13:  Pruning presented by Wally Peck

· Feb. 20:  Dahlia presented by Kristi Laron Reise

· Feb. 27:  Healing Gardens presented by Becky Livermore

· March 13:  Melons in Minnesota presented by Onen Markeson

· March 27:  Butterfly Gardening Can Be Simple presented by Brenca Finkenbinder

· April 10:  Hydrangeas presented by Jean Mathweg

All these events begin at noon.

Evening of Poetry

and Music

Also beginning at 7:00 p.m. on Feb. 13. will be our next Evening of Poetry and Music, hosted at the American Legion on 217 Minnesota Ave NW in downtown Bemidji. The evening will start with a set of music by Bemidji’s own singer/songwriter/guitarist Sonny Johnson. Following Sonny’s first set we will have another of our ever popular Poetry Slam events, then Sonny will provide music during the Slam intermission and again at the end of the event. A poetry slam is a competition at which poets read or recite original work. These performances are given scores by judges and the top three finalists are awarded cash prizes. Registered participants should have three readings of original poetry prepared in the event they make it through all three rounds. There is a 3 minute time limit per round, no props, just the voice and performance of the poet. The limit is 12 poets so if you want to share your poetry, call the Library right away at 751-3963 to pre-register. This event is free and open to the public, but is recommended for adult audiences. Also know that our next poetry event in April will feature family friendly poetry with the goal to include young poets as well as adults.

 Winter Reading Program

Our Winter Reading Program for adults continues through the end of March. You do not need to change any of your reading or audiobook listening habits (except to maybe read more), but simply let us know how much you are reading. You are still able to sign up for the program by coming into the Library for a reading log form, or easily enter your reading information on our program web site  If you reach the program milestone of 15 books, you will receive a beautiful coffee mug and be eligible for the drawing for other prizes

Continuing on Saturday March 8 and April 5 will be our popular Father’s Reading Every Day (F.R.E.D.) storytime series. Fathers, grandfathers, big brothers and other adult men are invited to attend this wonderful program with the 3 to 6 year old child in their life. Call for details.

Local author presentations

After a false start in January (my apologies) we are very happy to announce the start of a new program series which will provide authors from Bemidji and the surrounding area a forum to talk about their writing. Published authors can call me at the Library or visit our web site  to learn about how they can submit their work for consideration in the program series. The schedule will have two events per month, typically on a Thursday evening or a Saturday. Watch for our announcement and schedule of local author presentations.

 Thank You

I want to give a big thanks to the Beltrami County History Center for recently providing the four presentations at the Library on Beltrami County history. We do hope to continue our collaboration with the History Center and provide more of these events in the future.
