Prudence "Prudy" Marie Kiewatt

Prudence "Prudy" Marie Kiewatt, 90, of Bemidji, MN, formerly of Blackduck, MN passed away on Sunday, October 29, 2017 at Tamarack Court in Bemidji.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, November 21, 2017 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Blackduck with Rev. James Sorensen officiating. Visitation will be held from 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM on Tuesday at the church. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery in Blackduck.

Prudy was born on July 22, 1927 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the daughter of August and Isabelle (D'amore) LaRosa. She was raised and attended school in the Milwaukee-West Allis, Wisconsin area. She graduated in 1944 from Nathan Hale High School in West Allis, WI. She worked for the Allis-Chalmers drafting and design department from 1944-1947. Upon Bob Kiewatt's discharge from the US Army in mid 1946, Bob and Prudy married in May 1947. Job opportunities took them to Austin, MN until 1949, when a chance came up to take over the Hide-Out Resort on Big Rice Lake near Pennington from Bob's family. Nothing more than two log cabins in the brush and jack pine, Prudy's life rapidly changed from big city girl to remote isolation much of the year in the north woods. Encountering endless but rewarding hard work, they turned the place into a thriving family resort. Prudy and Robert made many lifelong friends with customers who spent their vacations at the Hide-Out.

After the resort sold in 1973, she took a job in the office at the Northern Pines Good Samaritan Center in Blackduck, where she was employed for 26 years. Retiring in 1996, the next few years were spent refurbishing the cabin on the lake, and traveling to Alaska and Canada. When at home Prudy loved to cook and bake, always saying she learned the hard way, and "could not even boil water" in the early days. In spite of her misgivings, she was an excellent cook. The kitchen was always the scene of fresh baked goods. If a guest at her table, one never left hungry. She became an avid reader of many topics, all of which were of interest to her, not to mention sewing and knitting, a pastime and talent inherited from her mother. She was involved in league bowling for many years. She also loved the outdoors, making sure the yards and gardens were well taken care of at her home and cabin. If you couldn't find her right away, she would be down on the dock fishing when the work was done. She was a longtime member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Blackduck and served as the church treasurer for many years. She was also a member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary in Blackduck for many years.

Always interested in everything and helping always whenever she was needed, Prudy was a steadying influence for the whole family; her strength and calm were inspirations to us all. She moved to Birch Haven in Bemidji in 2014 and after Bob's death this past April, she moved to Tamarack Court.

Prudy is survived by ; 2 sons, Robert, Jr. (Barbara) Kiewatt of Blackduck, MN and Fredrick (Kelly) Kiewatt of Eagan, MN; 5 grandchildren, John (Julie) Kiewatt of Columbia Falls, Montana, Alicia Lea (Nick) Stenlund of Becker, MN, Michael (Lisa Fellows) Kiewatt of Bemidji, MN, Kevin Kiewatt of Eagan, MN and Kasey (Luke) Hylbak of Lakeville, MN; 5 great grandchildren, Evan Stenlund, Owen Stenlund, Maxwell Stenlund, Araya Kiewatt and Aivee Kiewatt; and numerous nieces and nephews, including Mike LaRosa of Marysville, WA and Lucy LaRosa of Port Ludlow, WA.
