Authorities identify man who died in fiery crash on Interstate 29 south of Grand Forks

Charles E. Souder, 88 of Turtle River, MN died on Monday, February 13, 2017 at Sanford Bemidji Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, February 16, 2017 at Cease Family Funeral Home in Bemidji, MN. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in the spring at the Pine Ridge Cemetery in Turtle River, MN.

He was born June 1, 1928 in Turtle River, MN, the son of John and Bertha (Nelson) Souder. He was raised and educated in the Bemidji area. He joined the US Navy in 1944, serving during World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. He served during the occupation of Germany during World War II, onboard the USS Bear (APA237), USS PCE 880, USS PCE 902, the USS Oklahoma (CLG-5), USS Wilkinson (DLG-5), COMCRUDESPAC, and onboard the USS Aludra (AF-55). He earned the World War II Victory Medal, the Navy Occupation Medal with European Clasp, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (Korean), and the Vietnam Service Medal with 3 stars. He retired from the US Navy in 1973. He married Lois Sadek on May 5, 1951, and they have been married for 65 years. He drove truck for McClean's Trucking Company for 13 years before retiring in 1986. He enjoyed time spent hunting and fishing.

With loving memory he is survived by his wife Lois Souder of Turtle River, MN, Children, Charles (Shirley) Souder of Bellevue, WA, Greg (Glora) Souder of Bemidji, MN, Cathy Souder of Turtle River, MN, Grandchildren, Lanette (Christian) Tapia, Dane (Ashley) Souder, Gina (Cory) Jones, Greg Souder, Christopher Souder, Jessica Mehutcs, Chris Souder, Heather Souder, and 7 Great-Grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, son David Souder, brothers Joe Souder, Don Souder, and Wesley Souder.
