Herbert Loyd Riley, 95 of Bemidji, MN died Monday, February 9, 2015 with his family by his side.
Funeral services will be at 10:00 am, Friday, February 13, 2015 at the Cease Family Funeral Home in Bemidji, Minnesota. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service on Friday at the funeral home. A Celebration of Life Gathering, with luncheon, will be held immediately afterward at the Neilson Place Social Hall. Interment will be at the Guthrie cemetery in Guthrie, MN in the spring.
Herb was born in Casselton, ND on May 17, 1919. He was the oldest of nine children born to Alma and Millard Riley. The Riley family moved to the Bemidji area when Herb was 5 years old. Herb met Delores Ames in Guthrie, MN, and were married on August 30, 1941. They have been marred for 73 years. Together they raised 6 children.
Herb was a logger when they were first married and shortly after joined the Army/Air Force. While in the service, he was a Dental Technician and a Dental Lab instructor. After his service in the Army/Air Force, he then went to work in construction. During his early career, a construction project sent him to Sanderstom, Greenland. After returning from Greenland, he worked on several construction projects in Bemidji and later became Superintendent for Baukol Construction of Grand Forks, ND. He worked for Red Lake Builders for many years until he retired.
Herb enjoyed the outdoors and he loved to hunt and fish. He went to Alaska several times on fishing trips. For many years, he traveled to Columbia Falls, Montana to visit, fish, and hunt with his brothers. During his time at Neilson Place, he enjoyed playing cribbage with his good friends, Tom and Will. He would always look forward to the "Next Game", or one more hand. He enjoyed music. Old-time accordion, polka/waltz music were his favorites. In his early years, Herb played banjo in a band for barn dances. He always remembered birthdays and special occasions for all of his family members and friends and enjoyed making personalized greeting cards on his computer. He loved to be with his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife, Delores; his children, Larry (Mary) Riley, Judy Bernhardt, Barb Super, and Pat (Steve) Boe of Bemidji; his 11 grandchildren; his several great grandchildren; his brothers, Wally (Dottie) Riley, Ken (Dixie) Riley, and Jim (Alice) Riley of Columbia Falls, MT; and his sisters, Dorothy Hirt and Lila (John) Cronemiller of Bemidji.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Alma (Lambrecht) and Millard Riley; his son, Ken Riley; his daughter, Shirley Portz; and his three brothers, Paul, Harry, and Don Riley.
