Sanford Center schedules ‘historic’ press conference; possible local IFL team?

BEMIDJI -- In a cryptic press release sent Monday morning, Sanford Center officials said a “historic announcement” will be made Wednesday at the Sanford Center, further fueling speculation Bemidji’s Indoor Football League expansion bid is going ahead as planned.

The press release went on to say, “History will be made this Wednesday in Bemidji” and announced an 11 a.m. press conference at the arena.

The release was light on other details but Sanford Center officials confirmed last week that an IFL expansion franchise in Bemidji was close to a done deal.

Members of the IFL expansion committee were in Bemidji in July to discuss the possible expansion of the 10-team league. IFL expansion committee coordinator Chris Kokalis said for a team to be in place by 2014, Sanford Center officials would have to find an ownership group by late August or mid-September.

Chris Kokalis, the league’s expansion committee coordinator and the owner of the Cedar Rapids Titans, declined to comment when reached for a statement Monday afternoon. Other calls to the IFL offices in Richmond, Va., were not immediately returned.
