William F. Burkhardt
William F. Burkhardt, 84, of Bemidji died Thursday, August 15, 2013 at the Sanford Bemidji Medical Center. At his request there will be no services. Interment will be in his family plot in Long Prairie, MN. Arrangements are with the Cease Family Funeral Home of Bemidji. He was born on June 13, 1929, in Chicago, Illinois, the son of William Sr. and Cecile (Kaufman) Burkhardt. He was raised and educated in Chicago. He enlisted in the US Army in 1946 serving first in the US Army Corp of Engineers making maps and later serving as a Military Policeman in Honolulu, Hawaii. He was Honorably Discharged in 1949 and returned to Chicago. He entered the electronics industry first and attended the DeVry Technical Institute studying electrical theory and technology. He was employed as a foreman in an electronics manufacturing plant from 1950 until 1955. He moved to Minnesota where he was employed by the Telex Corporation, and later as a supervisor at Remington Rand UNIVAC, while also studying Electrical Engineering at the University of Minnesota. In 1957 he was selected for entrance in the Minnesota Highway Patrol Candidate School at Camp Ripley. Over the years he attended many courses dedicated to High Speed Driving, and Advanced Accident Investigation and Reconstruction, becoming an Accident Reconstruction Specialist for Patrol District 2600. He moved to Bemidji in 1978 and retired from the State Patrol in 1984. After retirement he enjoyed his privacy, living on the lake. He is survived by his daughter, Karen (Michael) Hansen of Fargo, ND; granddaughters,Audrey (Adam) Kankelfritz of Fargo, ND,Sarah (Neil) Anderson of Moorhead, MN; step-daughters,Nancy (Matt) Fisher and Amy Lanter; step-son, James Anderson; 3 Great-Grandsons; Christian, Cooper, and Malcolm and special friend,Ileine DeVries. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Rita, and wife Alice.
