Man killed in vehicle-school bus crash near Redby
REDBY, Minn. -- A 41-year-old California man was killed in a head-on collision with a school bus Tuesday morning on the Red Lake Indian Reservation.
According to a release, at 7:31 a.m., the Red Lake Department of Public Safety responded to the motor vehicle-school bus crash on Minnesota Highway 1 near Redby, Minn.
There was one occupant of the vehicle, the make and model was not released, and 19 school-aged children in grades K-5 on the bus, the release said. The accident was a head-on collision and the driver of the vehicle, a 41-year-old California man, was deceased the the scene, officials said.
The bus driver suffered fractures to his hand and wrist. The majority of the children were transferred to Red Lake Indian Health Service hospital where they were treated for minor injuries and all were released, officials said in the release.
According to the Department of Public Safety, investigators determined the vehicle was traveling eastbound on Highway 1 and crossed the center line and struck the bus head on before the driver could totally swerve out of the way. Speed likely played a factor in the crash, authorities said.
The name of the man has not been released pending notification of relatives, authorities said. The accident remains under investigation.
