Spring is here, more snow in the forecast

BEMIDJI -- In a winter seemingly too long, it was fitting that on Thursday, the first official day of spring, the Bemidji area found itself in a winter storm warning.

According to the National Weather Service office in Grand Forks, N.D., a band of low pressure was forecast to move east, bringing with it rain and then snow to a large swath of northwest Minnesota, including Beltrami County and Bemidji.

The winter storm warning runs from 1 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, the weather service said. A total of 3 to 6 inches of snow is expected, but some areas could see as much as 6 inches to a foot of new snow. Strong winds also could be a factor, creating areas of blowing snow that could make travel difficult.

The weather service said precipitation will most likely start out as rain and turn to snow, making driving conditions difficult. After the snow moves through, temperatures will remain cold for several few days into next week.
