Former N.D. attorney general found dead

FARGO – Former North Dakota Attorney General Nicholas Spaeth was found dead here Sunday, police say.

He was 64.

Fargo police Lt. Joel Vettel said officers were dispatched to the 500 block of Eighth Street South at 1:43 p.m. Sunday.

Dispatchers had received a call of a suicidal male at that address.

Vettel said the cause and manner of Spaeth’s death have not yet been determined.

“At this time, it does not appear that there are any signs of foul play,” Vettel said.

His body has been taken to the state medical examiner’s office for an autopsy.

Spaeth, a Democrat, was attorney general of North Dakota from 1985 to 1992. In 1992, he ran for governor against Ed Schafer and lost.
