Red Lake man charged with burglary, arson

A 24-year-old Red Lake man is in custody in Beltrami County Jail following his Nov. 25 arrest on state Highway 1 on the Red Lake Reservation.

Fabian Wayne English was charged Monday in Beltrami County District Court with three felony counts: first-degree burglary with the possession of a dangerous weapon; second-degree arson of a building valued at $1,000 or more; and fleeing a peace officer in a motor vehicle.

Additional charges relating to the other Beltrami County victims from English's crime spree on Thursday, Nov. 24, are pending. Bail was set at $175,000.00 with a second appearance in Beltrami County District Court scheduled for Dec. 6.

Additional charges are pending with the U.S. Attorney's office in relation to an ongoing FBI/ Red Lake Tribal Police investigation on English's subsequent actions on the Red Lake Reservation before he was apprehended.

According to the Beltrami County criminal complaint:

Early Thursday morning, Nov. 25, a Turtle River Township resident awoke to see a Buick Electra on fire in his driveway. He also discovered that his 2001 Ford pickup had been stolen. Beltrami County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to the arson and vehicle theft call.

English stole the Ford pickup and drove to a nearby residence, where he broke into a detached garage and stole two firearms and other items. He put the guns and other items he had stolen from other area break-ins into a 2007 Chevrolet pickup at the burgled residence. He then set fire to the Ford pickup and drove away.

A deputy followed the tracks of the Ford pickup to the property where English was making his getaway in the stolen Chevrolet pickup with the stolen goods. The deputy saw the Chevrolet pickup drive through the yard to evade law enforcement. The deputy turned and chased English driving the Chevrolet pickup at speeds of more than 90 mph.

The pursuit lasted about two hours with Red Lake Police officers picking up the chase when English drove across the Red Lake Reservation line. Red Lake officers eventually cornered English on Highway 1 west of the village of Red Lake; English then tried to escape on foot. He was arrested after an exchange of gunfire, during which he was shot in the ankle. English was treated at North Country Regional Hospital.

Beltrami County deputies determined English had committed 10 thefts and burglaries in the Beltrami County area, as well as the theft of three motor vehicles.

The Red Lake Department of Public Safety, Beltrami County Sheriff's Office, Bemidji Police Department, Minnesota State Patrol and the U.S. Border Patrol assisted in the pursuit and follow-up investigation.
