Fargo student dies after swimming pool incident

FARGO – A teenager who was found Feb. 18 unconscious in the Fargo South High School swimming pool has died.

Frederic Ndereimana, 19, died Saturday at a Fargo hospital, according to police.

Until now, the teen’s name and condition were unknown. Fargo Schools did not previously release the info, and police said the matter was under investigation.

School district spokesperson AnnMarie Campbell said that Nderimana was found unconscious in the school pool at about 11 a.m. Feb. 18 while taking a Fit for Life physical education class, a required course.

Upon his removal from the pool, the class teacher administered CPR until emergency responders arrived, Campbell said. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment before his death on Saturday.

Campbell said South High School will offer support to the school community through the school’s counseling office and the employee assistance program.

Teachers will give information on the grieving process to students and offer support to those who are in need today.

Campbell extended the school’s thoughts and prayers to the entire Ndereimana family, and said that the district continues to work with police.

Fargo police Lt. Joel Vettel said the investigation does not appear to show any criminal intent so far. He expected the department’s investigation to be completed either this week or next week.
