NEWPORT, Minn. -- Criminal charges are expected to be filed Friday in the stabbing death of a Bailey Nurseries employee in Newport.

The victim of the Thursday afternoon stabbing and the suspect were male Bailey employees, Newport Police Chief Curt Montgomery said Friday morning. The victim’s name and other information about the incident were not immediately released as the investigation continues.

The suspect fled the scene, but later turned himself in to St. Paul authorities, Montgomery said.

The death occurred in a work building near the nursery’s main office on Bailey Road. Authorities were called there about 3:40 p.m. Thursday.

The suspect, a 57-year-old St. Paul man, was arrested on suspicion of second-degree murder, according to Washington County jail records.

Montgomery said he was told by St. Paul police that the suspect had turned himself in to authorities there. The suspect was taken to Regions Hospital with unspecified injuries before being booked in jail.

The Washington County Attorney’s Office planned to file charges on Friday, a spokeswoman said.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is assisting in the investigation.
