Former Minneapolis mayoral candidate attacked

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A former Minneapolis mayoral candidate says he was injured in an attempted theft of his iPhone.

Former Hennepin County Commissioner Mark Andrew tells the Star Tribune he was attacked at a coffee shop at the Mall of America about 7 p.m. Thursday.

Andrew says he was at a table when someone grabbed his phone and ran out. He says he chased the thief, who he thinks was male, and two young women waiting outside the Starbucks tackled him. He says one beat him on the head and face with a billy club.

Two females who allegedly attacked him, including a teen, were arrested. Andrew needed nine stitches, but he got his phone back from a passerby who found it.

Andrew placed second to Betsy Hodges in the November election.
