Two children killed in Wisconsin car-truck accident

PRESCOTT, Wis. - Two children died and three other people were injured after a truck and a sport utility vehicle collided late Thursday afternoon south of Prescott in northwest Wisconsin.

Pierce County authorities have not yet released names of the dead -- a 12-year-old girl who died at the scene and a 5-year-old girl who died later at a River Falls hospital.

One child who died was the daughter of SUV driver Kari Milberg, 32, of Centuria. She and two other children in the vehicle, a 3-year-old boy and another 5-year-old girl, were all transported to Regions Hospital in St. Paul.

Pierce County Sheriff Nancy Hove said the SUV driver was the mother of two of the children and the other two are relatives.

The straight truck was driven by Jose Mendoza, 24, of Rockford, Ill. Neither Mendoza nor his two passengers were injured.

The accident occurred on Wisconsin Highway 35, also known as the Great River Road. The road was closed for several hours because of the accident.

Hove said road conditions were not to blame for the crash.

Three medical helicopters were used along with ground ambulance units from nearby Prescott, River Falls and Ellsworth.
