UPDATE: Bemidji truck driver dies in crash with Amtrak train

Friday afternoon a 2011 Kenworth semi tractor-trailer collided with an Amtrak passenger train in Todd County. The driver of the semi, Donald Ray Hedlund Sr., was pronounced dead at the scene.

Hedlund, 57, of Bemidji was travelling northwest on 317th Street in Fawn Lake Township when he failed to stop at a railroad crossing at Red Rock Road, according to the Todd County Sheriff’s Office. He was driving for Minnesota Limited out of Big Lake.

Two passengers on the train were taken by Staples Ambulance to the Lake Wood Hospital for treatment of their injuries. The sheriff’s office reported that several others suffered minor injuries but were not transported to the hospital.

The Todd County Sheriff’s Office received the accident call at 4:25 p.m.The Staples Fire and Rescue, Wadena County Sheriff’s Office and Minnesota State Patrol assisted at the scene.
