Man, 85, struck and killed after getting his mail

COTTAGE GROVE — An 85-year-old Cottage Grove man was killed Tuesday when he was hit by a car while crossing the street after retrieving his mail, police said.

The man was hit by an SUV about 2 p.m. near the Cottage Grove-St. Paul Park border.

Paramedics found the man unresponsive, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. His name was being withheld Tuesday pending family notification.

Information about the female driver was not immediately available. She was cooperating with police.

The driver showed no signs of impairment, Cottage Grove police Capt. Pete Koerner said.

The area is near the top of a hill, and it was not immediately known whether the driver saw the man.

Cottage Grove police continued to investigate Tuesday evening with assistance from Woodbury police.
