Suspect in Minnesota double homicide arrested

GRANITE FALLS —- The suspect in a double homicide this month in Granite Falls is in custody.

Yellow Medicine County Sheriff Bill Flaten confirmed Tuesday night that Andrew Joseph Dikken is in the Yellow Medicine County Jail in Granite Falls. Flaten had no further details immediately and said a statement was expected from the state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.

Dikken, 28, of Granite Falls and formerly of Renville, had been sought since Labor Day in the shooting deaths of Kara Ann Monson, 26, of Granite Falls, and Christopher Allan Panitzke, 28, of Redwood Falls. Monson died at the scene of multiple gunshot wounds, and Panitzke died Sept. 8 at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis of complications from multiple gunshot wounds.

The shooting occurred at Monson's home in the early morning hours of Sept. 2. Panitzke was able to call 911. He was treated in Granite Falls before being airlifted to Minneapolis.

Dikken's vehicle -- the subject of numerous alerts from law enforcement asking the public to be vigilant -- was found Sept. 4 in a gravel pit near the Minnesota River south of Sacred Heart. Law enforcement officers had conducted extensive searches for Dikken in that area without success.

The investigation has been led by the Granite Falls Police Department, the Yellow Medicine County Sheriff's Office and the BCA with the assistance of other agencies.
